We think good decision making is all about being right. Learn why that’s the wrong approach.
Why Being Right is Not Right
You don’t win the game of life by being right. A finish line is an end.
Instead life is a constant process of learning, adaptation and growth.
The Lure of Being Right
Being right is incredibly seductive. We all want and desire to be right:
We all want to feel our way is the right way
We take pride and confidence in believing we know more than others.
Every proof we are right boosts are confidence.
Being Right is Not the Goal
However, being right means there has be an end.
An end to connection, an end to growth and an end to learning.
Spike Milligan’s Tombstone reads “I told you I was sick”. Pointing out the existential futility in being ‘right’.
Life is a continuous process of learning and growth. Things that grow and thrive never stop changing, adapting and learning.
It’s better to be learning and growing, rather than try to constantly trying to prove your ‘rightness’.
How to Think Differently About Being Right
Instead of thinking how I am right?
Let’s think:
- How can I get better?
- Why might I be wrong?
- What have I assumed?
Find people who disagree with you. Stop seeing yourself in a contest to be right. See it is an opportunity to learn and adapt:
Listen, I mean really listen, to people who disagree. What makes them think that? Why might they be right? Why do they even think it’s important to disagree?
You may not end up with answers. That’s fine, as that’s your Edge of Possible. It is the place where you can learn and grow.
By identifying what we don’t know it gives us a space to grow into.
